Madeira Arts and Crafts
Vime in Madeira is a tradition that takes us back to 1850. Despite the apparent abundance of wicker objects, this art is dying and nowadays there are fewer than 10 people in Madeira who still do this work.
Manuel Figueira, a resident in the central valley of Curral das Freiras, is still one of the few skilled craftsmen that dedicated most of his life in the wicker-making industry. With more than 50 years of expertise in the business, Manuel opened doors to his private workshop where he shared a bit of his background and work.
